Public-domain finder: classics people read, ranked against the editions already out there
Every week we take the most downloaded books on Project Gutenberg, count how many editions of each are already catalogued on Open Library, and check which are on Apple's free charts. A high score means many readers and relatively few editions: a gap a new, well-made edition could fill.
Public domain in the United States does not mean public domain everywhere, and a modern translation of an old book can still be under copyright. Read our guide for publishers before you republish anything.
The first list is built on the next Monday update.
