The rules behind the numbers
Amazon KDP offers two royalty options on Amazon.com. The 70% option is only open to list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 (the top of that band rose from $9.99 on 7 July 2026), and Amazon deducts a delivery fee of $0.15 per megabyte of the file before applying the 70%. The 35% option has no delivery fee and works from $0.99 for small files. Public-domain books only get 35%.
Apple Books pays 70% at every price when you publish directly. Kobo Writing Life pays 70% from $2.99 up and 45% below it, with no upper limit. Google Play Books pays 70% of your list price in the US and most other countries, even when Google discounts the book. Barnes & Noble Press pays 70% of the price you set.
Draft2Digital delivers to many stores at once and keeps about 10% of the list price, which leaves roughly 60% at Apple, Kobo and B&N. Its published Amazon figure (60% from $2.99 to $9.99, otherwise 30%) predates Amazon's July 2026 change and may move.
Outside the US, Amazon, Kobo and Google take VAT out of the price before working out your share, so the same list price pays less in Europe.
